Your first week in Kuala Lumpur: SIM, bank, food, and finding your people

The plane lands and suddenly you're an international student. Here's the exact playbook for week one — written by students who've already done it.

Your first week in Kuala Lumpur: SIM, bank, food, and finding your people

Day one in a new country is equal parts thrilling and overwhelming. The good news: the first week in KL follows a simple checklist, and you won't be doing it alone — there's a NextStep group chat full of students who landed before you.

The week-one checklist

  • Airport pickup → temporary housing (we arrange both)
  • Get a local SIM at the airport — Hotlink or CelcomDigi
  • Open a student bank account with your offer letter
  • Register your address and student pass with EMGS
  • Buy a Touch 'n Go card for the MRT and buses

Eat your way into the city

The fastest way to feel at home in Malaysia is the food court. It's cheap, it's halal-friendly, and it's where students actually hang out. Order the nasi lemak, try the teh tarik, and don't be shy — the aunties at the stalls will look after you.

Homesick on day three is normal — everyone gets it. Message the group chat. Within an hour someone who felt exactly the same last year will invite you to dinner.

I arrived not knowing a single person. By Friday I had a study group, a favourite mamak stall and three new friends from back home.
